Can you appreciate a game for when it came out and what it was doing for its time? Play the 360 version. Are you the kind of person who struggles to go back to older games and care about graphics? Play the remaster. I've seen very little negativity about the new content but didn't get that far myself.Īt the end of the day it really just matters what you want out of a game. The biggest selling point for the remaster is added content, they've added a section to the game that was cut from the original, and also changed some of the replays to differentiate them a bit more. (I'm trying not to go too biased with the music so I just picked an early song with moderate differences instead of going for one of the tracks I feel they butchered) The combat is totally changed in the remaster from kind of mindless but easy to play Zelda style combat to more character action style combat like Automata. The remixed music is pretty widely considered inferior to the original soundtrack, though again certainly not bad outside of maybe one or two tracks. The remaster changes the artstyle quite a bit, the 360/PS3 era bloom is mostly gone and a lot of the color temperature is removed in favor of more flat, realistic coloring for areas, and the models look more like people instead of strange anime dolls. You also have the option to use the Japanese voices in the remake if you want. The remaster also fully voices all minor dialogue and side content, whereas the original only dubbed the cutscenes and important dialogue. The dubbing in the original game (which was used worldwide, the Japanese version of Nier Gestalt on 360 uses the English VO) is top notch and the redub done for the remaster doesn't sound quite as good, though it's certainly not bad.

I and many other people prefer the Father character though, as he's a breath of fresh air for a Japanese game that typically have protagonists like the Brother.

Replicant is technically the original vision of the character, as Square Enix thought a brother fighting for his sister wouldn't sell in the west and had the incredible insight that a father fighting for his daughter would resonate more, so they replaced the protagonist and gave him a very different personality to fit an older, more world-weary character, while the Japanese PS3 release used the original intended Brother version of the character that was then used in the remake.
